Batteries are an important part of our everyday life and in many cases they limit the size, shape and usefulness of mobile items. From phones to pacemakers better batteries are needed to allow for progress.
Researches at the university of Illinois, USA have developed a battery with a much greater power-to-weight ratio than the ones currently on the market. The university states:
‘The most powerful batteries on the planet are only a few millimeters in size, yet they pack such a punch that a driver could use a cellphone powered by these batteries to jump-start a dead car battery – and then recharge the phone in the blink of an eye.’
The batteries combine the tradition lithium-ion batteries and capacitors at a microscopic level. As a consequence they can fit all that juice in a much smaller package and charge a thousand times faster than the alternatives.
