Artificial heart designers to begin human trials

The French biomedical company Carmat have announced they will begin trials of their artificial heart.

The device is biocompatible and mimics the actions of the human heart’s contractions using a hydraulically powered membrane. The heart is controlled by tiny micro sensors which make continual adjustments of the blood supply to meet the user’s needs.

Approval has been given to test the heart in patients in Belgium, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Slovenia – candidates are currently being assessed to find a suitable recipient.
