Oyster Wave Power Design

When most people think of renewable energy their thoughts go straight to the big players – solar and wind but waves are one of the most powerful things that mother nature has to throw at us. That power is is what Aquamarine are using to their (and our) benefit with the ‘Oyster’.


The Oyster consists of 2 main parts – a horizontal base and the vertical section. It sits on the sea bed and as the waves move past they move the vertical section with them – the vertical part however is fixed at the bottom so the movement is merely back and forth – this movement is used to pump water to a hydroelectric plant on the shore.


The current incarnation – the Oyster 800 – is installed at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney and generates are 800 kW at any time. It’s 26 metres wide and sits 13 metres under water – the top being visible able the water.

The next model (the Oyster 801) is planned for deployment in 2014.

BMW i – BMW’s solar powered dream

BMW is a brand associated with luxury cars with vroom under the hood and their BMW i project is no different – there is one significant difference though – they’re electric!

The range consists of 2 cars, the BMW i3 which is entirely electric and the i8 which is a hybrid. Both cars are due to be in production next year.
The i3 will take you 100 miles once fully charge and boasts a battery that can be charged to 80% charge in less than 30 minutes.


While the i8 is the sportier versions and offers an impressive 104 mpg , 245 horse power and a top speed of 155 mph – it also looks damned good:


The most off putting thing for most people when it comes to electric cars is the problem of access to charging points but BMW have surged ahead in forming partnerships to ensure that this just isn’t an issue. The most recent unveiling is their partnership with SOLARWATT to  design a solar powered car port charging facility for the car which can also top up the homes electricity.


Morephone – the bendy phone

The morephone is a concept design by ‘Human media lab’ at Queen’s university, Canada who also developed the Paperphone
When a call or message is received instead of ringing or vibrating the phone itself curls – it can be set by the user to curl in a different ways for different things, for instance when a text message is a received just the top right corner may curl.


The phone itself is made from a thin, bendable material and underneath the display are wires made from a shape memory alloy which changes shape when electrical charge is passed through it.


Solar powered plane makes iconic flight

This week a solar powered aeroplane ‘Solar impulse’ made a flight over the iconic Golden gate bridge in San Francisco – capturing attention once again.


It’s team are preparing for a flight across America.

The Solar impulse was designed as proof of principle for powered flight without fossil fuels and it’s designers are aiming for perpetual flight.

It has been created by Bertrand Piccard (who also co-piloted the first non-stop flight around the world in a balloon) and André Borschberg.

The team have already proved the ability of the solar impulse to fly day and night way back in 2010 when André flew from 6.51am on the 7th July and didn’t land until 9am on the 8th.
